March is National Nutrition Month

University Dining Services and the American Dietetic Association want to remind the university community that a balanced, healthful eating style is attainable. Stay tuned this week for tips from the “Eat Right” campaign. The campaign encourages all Americans to take the first step toward making healthful food and physical activity choices.

Today’s tip is physical activity for fitness and health.

  • Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is the best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness.
  • Set a goal to be physically active at least 30 minutes every day. If you can’t do it all at once, you can break up your physical activity into 10-minute sessions throughout the day.
  • If you’re currently inactive, start with a few minutes of an activity such as walking, then gradually increase the time as you become stronger.
  • If you don’t like walking, find an activity that you do enjoy. Finding something that you enjoy and working it into your routine are key to succeeding at being more physically active. Biking outside, using fitness machines — such as exercise bikes, elliptical machines or treadmills, going to fitness classes or swimming laps are other great ways to be active.

During the month of March, watch for the weekly nutrition display and trivia contest across from the Pawn, near the Terrace Café or in Tainter Dining Hall. You could be a winner.
